APSE Nation Award Win!

H3, in partnership with Stockport Homes, has won the ‘Best Health and Wellbeing Initiative’ award at the APSE awards. The winners were announced at a ceremony in Oxford on 7 September 2017.

The award recognises excellence in local government frontline services across the UK, demonstrating innovative ideas, supporting continuous improvement, and developing new strategies to deliver local services whilst also highlighting the commitment to innovation and adaptation in local services.

H4 Hospital works with some of the most excluded people in the community, often with multiple health and social issues and alienated or barred from mainstream services. Its objectives are to bring stability, enable people to manage their health in the community, prevent crisis situations arising and promote greater physical and mental wellbeing.

This is a Big Lottery funded project that has been developed over the last 4 years and we are very proud to have gained this recognition.

Exhibiting at Under One Roof

Last month, the H3 team attended and exhibited at Homeless Link's annual Under One Roof Conference. Katie, our Health Advocate, gives her feedback...

"Homeless Link's annual 2017 conference provided us with the opportunity to be part of the frontline services' vision to 'end homelessness'. Homeless Link are at the forefront of the sector in terms of training and knowledge, policy and awareness and there were myriad workshops and talks covering multiple topics, all of which relevant to the sector and H3's vision.

Understanding the 'bigger picture' and how strategies around ending homelessness and addressing inequalities in health were central to the conference. It was a refreshing and exciting approach to multi -agency work.

Key areas of learning included: working with the 'Housing First' Model; Reflective Practise; Challenging decisions around the Care Act and working with people with 'Complex Needs' experiencing trauma.

Having the opportunity to host a stand enhanced our networking potential and we were able to share ideas with agencies from across the country; confirming that the challenges and opportunities to make a difference are not geographically bound, despite the challenges around funding."

Thanks Homeless Link and all those we met!

Women's trip to Blackpool

Once a year H3 supports residents living in women’s temporary accommodation to go on a day trip of their choice. This summer the residents of Strathclyde House decided on a trip to Blackpool and project workers planned a great day taking on board the ideas from residents.

Highlights included:

  • Blackpool Tower Eye: amazing views along the coastline and the 360ft high sheer glass drop tested everyone’s nerves and fear of heights.

  • Blackpool Tower 4D cinema experience: a film showing the history and glamour of Blackpool of the ballroom, theme park and tower, with lots of water and foam thrown into the mix in true 4D cinema experience style.

  • Picnic by the sea: with fantastic weather!

  • Blackpool Tower Circus: amazing acrobatic performances including high ropes and clowns

(In amongst all the activities there was of course some time for some Blackpool classics of Mr Whippy ice creams, donuts, rock and Blackpool’s famous all you can eat buffet.)

The day gave the residents freedom and the opportunity to do something different and have some fun. The positive environment gave resulted in personal reflections and some positive conversations with each other and project workers. Some residents stated that it made them feel more inspired and positive about the future and spoke with more clarity about where they saw themselves going.

It was really was a great day, that created many memories for residents and is still reflected on positively.

The Prevention Alliance new office opens with help from H3

The Prevention Alliance have moved from their office at Flag to their own venue up the hill at 45 St Petersgate. Over the last month H3 have delivered a range of volunteer-led services to The Prevention Alliance. This includes painting and decorating, furniture assembly and removals to transform the space and ensure it is ready for its new life as a support hub.

H3 support and train residents at homeless temporary accommodation to volunteer in these services to provide work-like experience, re-use old skills and find focus in positive activity. They provide services to vulnerable members of the community but also look out for different projects with a social mission.

Turning an old hairdressers into a vibrant new support hub was a new challenge for H3. With skilled volunteers from past trades in driving, painting and decorating, joinery and yard work they were able to pull together a great team to deliver a beautiful new office space.

The decision to buy services of a local homeless charity, and give opportunities for their volunteers, highlights the drive of the TPA to provide a space and a service that enables change.

Siobhan Myers, a Senior Keyworker from the Prevention Alliance said, “We are eternally grateful to the H3 volunteers and Molly.  Due to the TPA being a drop-in service, it was vital that there was minimal disruption to the service so the move needed to be completed to a very tight deadline.  The H3 volunteers were professional, courteous, patient and incredibly efficient.  Tommy did a fantastic job in the decoration of the new office- he also suggested improvements to our plans which were implemented and the office looks much brighter as a result!  Paul’s perseverance, dedication and carpentry skills ensured that our new desks were assembled well within our target deadline.  Andrew, Eddie and Hiran made the move a seamless success- they worked tirelessly moving desks, computers, office chairs and other equipment on a very hot and humid afternoon.  Three van loads later, the TPA were officially in their new home.  We cannot thank H3 enough- for their talent and hard work, but also for their professionalism, good humour and sensitivity.”

Molly Bishop, Development Officer and Volunteer Manager said “This opportunity was something different from our normal jobs which tend to be smaller. This provided the chance to be part of a bigger project and see it develop TPA could not have been more friendly and supportive to the volunteers. They all felt a great sense of pride over their contribution.”

If you would like H3 services for yourself, your company or a vulnerable member of the community, please contact Molly on 07800618628. Similarly, if you would like to volunteer to supervise or co-ordinate jobs please do get in touch.
